Registration Overview
- I would like to lease a cat. Where can I get a lease agreement form?
-
CFA does not provide a standard lease form. A simple lease agreement, including the name and registration number of the cat, name of lessee(s), lease period (from-to) and signatures of ALL registered owner(s), must be sent to CFA prior to or in conjunction with the processing of the first transaction.
For CFA purposes, all you need is a letter signed by all owners of the cat, stating:
- [Registered owner(s) of cat] hereby lease(s) the following cat to [name of lessee] for the period from [start date] to [end date].
- CFA registered name of cat
- CFA registration number
- Dated: [date]
- Signed: [(all) registered owner(s) of cat]
During the term of the lease, you may want to have in writing other details including, who is responsible for the cost of feeding and caring for the cat, who pays for any pregnancy (or non-pregnancy) associated vet bills and replacement value of the cat should something unforeseen happen.
- How do I register a litter if the male/female is leased?
-
A lease must be recorded with CFA if the owner(s) of record leases a sire or dam to an individual(s) with the intent the registered owner’s name(s) be excluded from all transactions during the specified lease period. The lease recording fee ($10.00) and a copy of the lease agreement, including the name and registration number of the cat, name of lessee(s), lease period (from-to) and signatures of ALL registered owner(s), must be sent to CFA prior to or in conjunction with the processing of the first transaction.
If any or all of the registered owners are to be included as lessees on a litter registration, complete the lease section on the litter application form only, it is not necessary to file a formal lease for this purpose (no additional fee is required).
The lease section on the litter application can still be used if the lease doesn’t fall into the above scenario. There is no official lease form provided by CFA. If a copy of a lease has to be provided, it is the lease that exists between the two parties.
- Where can I find a litter registration form?
-
There are two ways to register a litter:
1) use a completed application form mailed to our office, or
2) register a litter online. To register via mail, the CFA Litter Registration Application and the Application Instructions are available as a PDF file. You will need to download and install a free copy of the Acrobat Reader program, but once that is done you will be able to type in the information in each “field” and print the completed application.
To register your litter online, we have step-by-step instructions to walk you through the process.
If, for some reason, you are unable to use the online form, just email your mailing address and request to Central Office and we’ll put the form in the mail to you.
Please reference our Price List for the most current fees for litter registration.
- Where do I find the form to register my new cat with CFA?
-
An application for registration must come from the breeder. Contact the breeder and request the Application for Registration, commonly called a “blue slip”.
Note: The breeder may opt to withhold the “blue slip” if your purchase agreement specifies that the cat must be neutered/spayed prior to receipt of registration paperwork. This is a fairly common practice for breeders of pedigreed cats. If this is the case, CFA will not be able to assist you in obtaining registration papers until the terms of your sales contract are completed. If you have provided proof of neutering/spaying to the breeder and are still unable to obtain registration papers, please see below.
In order for the Cat Fanciers’ Association to provide registration for an individual cat when the standard application form has not been supplied by the breeder, the following documents must be provided along with a signed cover letter request to CFA:
A pedigree or other document, supplied by the breeder, establishing the cat’s eligibility for CFA registration. The date of birth and parent’s identifying CFA registration numbers and whether the cat was purchased with or without breeding rights.
OR…
Copy of the written sales agreement stating the conditions of the sale, signed by all parties. The agreement must indicate that CFA papers are to be provided. The date of birth and the parents’ identifying CFA registration numbers must be included as well as whether the cat was purchased with or without breeding rights.
AND…
Copies of canceled checks/receipts showing full payment must be included.
Copies of other documents showing compliance/satisfaction of all other prerequisites to the release of the application form by the breeder.
All of the above items are required. Should any item/information be missing, Central Office will not be able to assist you.
Upon receipt of these items, we will contact the breeder and request their comments and/or cooperation in resolving this situation in a timely matter. Please send the requested information to:

- I just bought a CFA registered cat. What do I need to do to transfer ownership?
-
To transfer ownership of a CFA registered cat to the name of a new owners(s), the transfer statement on the back of the cat’s registration certificate needs to be completed and signed by the present registered owner(s) as shown on the front of the certificate. The transfer date should be the date the actual transfer takes place. This date will be the official transfer date on CFA’s records.
Provide the name and mailing address of the new owner on the back of the certificate where indicated. Please mail the certificate to CFA with the transfer fee shown below. A new certificate will be issued with the new ownership.
The Early Bird Transfer of Ownership/Supplemental Transfer prices applies if you submit within 30 days of the Transfer Date. After 30 days, the Regular Transfer of Ownership/Supplemental Transfer fee will apply. Please reference our Price List for the most current fees.
- I've lost the blue paper the breeder gave me to register my cat. Can I get another?
-
You will need to contact the breeder. The breeder can request a duplicate Application for Registration (commonly called a “blue slip”), and it will be mailed to the breeder for them to forward on to you. Note: Duplicate “blue slips” will be mailed ONLY to the breeder of the litter.
To expedite the process, the breeder can order this duplicate “blue slip”
Note: The breeder will be asked for a credit card number merely to verify the order and mailing address. There is no fee for a duplicate “blue slip” and no charge will be made to the credit card.
- I've lost my cat's registration papers. What can I do?
-
If you are the registered owner of a cat, you can purchase a duplicate Certificate of Registration for a $15.00 fee.
If you prefer to handle the transaction by regular mail – in order to locate a cat’s records in our computer files without the CFA registration number and to issue a duplicate certificate, as much of the following information as possible is needed:

- Eye Color
- Sex
- Date of Birth
- Sire Name
- Sire’s CFA number
- Dam Name
- Dam’s CFA number
- Breeder Name/Address

The fee will be $15.00. If available, please include a photocopy of the cancelled check used to originally register the cat.
- The breeder won't give me registration papers for my new kitten. What do I do?
-
It is a fairly common practice for breeders of pedigreed cats to withhold registration papers until they receive proof that a purchased kitten has been neutered/spayed. If this is the case, CFA will not be able to assist you in obtaining registration papers until the terms of your sales contract are completed. If you have provided proof of neutering/spaying to the breeder and are still unable to obtain registration papers, please read on.
In order for the Cat Fanciers’ Association to provide registration for an individual cat when the standard application form has not been supplied by the breeder, the following documents must be provided along with a signed cover letter:

- My cat was registered as "Not For Breeding", but I plan to breed her. Help!
-
Unless the PIN is written on the “blue slip” by the breeder, CFA’s registration software will permit only “not for breeding” (NFB) registrations. In order for CFA to register a cat with breeding rights, the PIN must be written in the PIN box on the Application for Registration (“blue slip”). The PIN is a 5-digit computer generated random number, called a “Litter-PIN (personal identification number)” which will be printed only on the Certificate of Litter Registration provided to the breeder. Each litter registered will be assigned a different PIN valid only for that litter. CFA staff does not have access to the PIN. Only the breeder of the litter will know the PIN. If the cat has already been registered with CFA as a NFB cat, please contact the breeder to obtain the PIN. Write the PIN on the registration certificate and return it to CFA with a request to change the registration to a breeding cat. The fee for the correction is $15.00
- How can I be sure that kittens I sell with a "blue slip" are registered as "Not for Breeding"?
-
Since 1981, The Cat Fanciers’ Association has been the leader in providing NFB registrations . Our new procedure eliminates the possibility of clerical error, provides a greater safety for you and streamlines the registration process by removing the need for a signature. This improved process allows you to provide the blue slip to your purchaser with total confidence that the kitten will be registered as you intended.
Kitten registrations will be processed automatically as NFB unless YOU provide a “key” to unlock our software. The “key” is a 5-digit computer generated random number, called a “Litter-PIN (personal identification number)” which will be printed only on the Certificate of Litter Registration. Each litter you register will be assigned a different PIN valid only for that litter. Our staff will not have access to the PIN.
In order for kittens to be registered WITH breeding rights, you must provide the Litter-PIN to our staff by entering it on the individual registration application (blue slip), EVEN IF YOU, AS BREEDER, ARE THE REGISTERED OWNER OF THE CAT. Without the PIN, our software will permit only NFB registrations.
For Breeding=Insert Litter-PIN on blue slip
Not For Breeding =Omit Litter-PIN on blue slip
If you are concerned about someone guessing your PIN number, enter a large “X” in the PIN box. Our staff will not accept a PIN written over an “X”.
- Oops! I made a mistake when completing the registration certificate. Now what?
-
CFA does not allow the use of “white out” or erasures in Section C of a cat registration application (blue slip) or Sections 2 and/or 3 of a transfer of ownership application.
You will need to complete and send a Supplemental Transfer Form to CFA with your blue slip or registration certificate.
Be sure to include your mailing address with your request.

Expedited Service (twenty-four hour) has been established in order to accommodate those persons in urgent need of an individual cat registration number for showing or breeding purposes. The $30.00 fee covers up to two (2) transactions (such as a litter and one cat or two cats). Three (3)-to-four (4) transactions are an additional $12. Each additional transaction is an additional $6. Same day expedited service, received after 2 pm. is $60. Prior to submitting the paperwork to CFA, the applicant should contact this office regarding any additional fees needed for more than two transactions or for any other type of service (transfer, correction, etc.).
Please note that Expedited Service does not include any additional services that might be requested at the same time (such as certified pedigrees) and does not guarantee that certificates will be mailed to the applicant within 24 hours of receipt of the application. Normal mailing procedures (1st class or airmail outside the U. S.) of all completed documents will be followed unless the applicant also pays any additional fee needed for Express or Courier service mailing, which is not covered by the $30.00 Expedited Service fee.
An email address or telephone number is required in order for CFA to supply the needed registration number to the applicant within the promised 24-hour period. It is important that clear and easy-to-read email addresses be included on the application in the space provided. A registration number email that is returned to us undelivered due to an incorrect or misread email address cannot be re-sent.
TO TAKE ADVANTAGE OF EXPEDITED SERVICE
- Send the application to CFA by email (as an attachment), fax, or overnight service (the applicant pays the post office, FedEx, etc. for any shipping costs). CFA cannot guarantee that Expedited Service applications submitted by regular mail or airmail will be opened and processed immediately.
- Submit the application to CFA per the above instructions along with a note specifically requesting Expedited Service.
- Be sure to Include any required fee for normal processing of the application PLUS the Expedited Service fee ($30.00 for the first two items). CFA accepts all major credit cards as well as personal checks and money orders.
- Provide an email address or telephone number so that we can contact you with the cat number within 24 hours of receipt of the application.
- How do I transfer ownership of cats whose owner has died?
-
In the case of transfer of ownership of cats belonging to a deceased person, CFA can complete a service at the signed request of the person handling the estate upon receipt of proof of authority to sign and/or proof of death, which can include:
- A copy of the death certificate.
- Public notice of death (newspaper).
- A copy of the will detailing cat ownership and executor
- I've recently changed my name and need to update my cat's ownership.
-
If your name is changing due to marriage or divorce, it is helpful if you can provide us with the cat(s) registration numbers so we can change your name. There is no charge to change our computer records but if you want a new certificate the fee is $15 per corrected certificate.
- I don't like my cat's registered name. Can I change it?
-
The name of a registered cat can be changed or shortened if ALL of the following conditions are met:
- The cat has never earned a title (e.g. CH, GRP, DM) or received a National/Regional award; and
- No national/regional points have been earned in the current show season; and
- No litters have been CFA registered listing the cat as a parent; and
- You are the current registered owner of the cat. If the cat was previously individually registered in the breeder’s name, you must provide CFA with a signed statement of agreement from the breeder allowing the name change. If you have recently purchased the cat and have not yet transferred the cat into your name, it is recommended you obtain a letter of agreement and submit it in conjunction with the transfer application.
FEES:
Name Change-$15.00
Early Bird Transfer of Ownership/Supplemental Transfer – submitted within thirty (30) days of Transfer Date – $12.00
Regular Transfer of Ownership/Supplemental Transfer – $17.00
Cattery Name Suffix Addition/Deletion-$10.00The cat’s registration certificate should be returned to CFA along with your letter detailing the change desired.
- How do I correct the color or sex of my CFA registered cat?
-
To make a correction to a cat’s sex or color, please return the incorrect registration certificate, notating on the certificate the new sex or color. The fee for this service is $15.00. A corrected certificate will be issued to you. Be sure to include your current mailing address so the corrected certificate can be mailed to you.
- How do I correct a wrong sire, dam or birthdate on my cat's registration papers?
-
To make a correction to the registered sire, dam or birthdate of a litter, the breeder of the litter should submit the following:
- The incorrect litter certificate issued by CFA and any unused blue and/or yellow slips.
- A new litter form completed and signed with the correct information.
- A $15.00 correction fee.
If any cats have already been individually registered from the litter and new certificates are needed, the incorrect certificates can also be returned. The $15.00 correction fee applies for each individual certificate corrected. However, once the litter record has been officially corrected (and the correction fee paid), these individual certificates can be corrected for your records only at no charge.
- My cat is registered with another association. Can I still register it with CFA?
-
Under certain circumstances, a cat registered with another recognized association may be eligible for CFA registration without prior CFA litter registration by the breeder. Application for registration can be made via certified pedigree from an approved organization*** with the appropriate number of generations included with the application.
Note: these rules apply only to cats being transferred to CFA from other associations/registries recognized by CFA. Except LaPerm and Selkirk Rex. LaPerm and Selkirk Rex registered in another cat registry are eligible for CFA registration. A copy of the registration certificate must be provided to CFA with the request for registration. The “registration via pedigree” fee applies. To obtain registration for cats eligible under this policy, a 5-generation certified pedigree with the required number of generations for the breed, (see “Note” for exceptions to the 5-generation requirement), issued by the registrar of the association in which the cat is currently registered, must be submitted for CFA files. Pedigrees used for this type of registration will be accepted only from previously certified associations. The parents of the cat to be registered are considered to be ‘generation one.’
RECORDED CATS: Cats with one less generation of ancestry than required for the breed may be individually recorded for breeding purposes only. The requirements for recording are identical to those for individual registration via pedigree, except that one less generation of ancestry is required. Recorded cats may not be shown at CFA shows. The following breeds require the full number of generations for registration by pedigree (recording for breeding only does not apply): Abyssinian, Bengal, British Shorthair, Colorpoint Shorthair and Persian.
NOTE The following breeds require certified pedigrees for the number of generations indicated in parentheses after the breed name: Abyssinian (8), American Wirehair (4), Balinese* (3 or 5), Chartreux (4), Colorpoint Shorthair (3 or 5*), Devon Rex (3), European Burmese (8 from North American registries; 5 from all other registries), Japanese Bobtail (3), Khao Manee (proof of import), Korat (3), LaPerm (no pedigree required, see * at beginning of Section 3), Lykoi (3, unknown permitted), Oriental (3), Persian (8), Ragdoll (3), Russian Blue (8), Scottish Fold (3), Selkirk Rex (no pedigree required, see * at beginning of Section 3), Siamese (8), Siberian (3), Tonkinese (3), Toybob (3, unknown permitted) and Turkish Angora (3). All other breeds require 5 generations.
*Only certain outcrossed Balinese/Javanese and certain Colorpoint Shorthairs are eligible to be registered using a 3 generation pedigree. Contact the CFA Central Office for details.
Titles and awards won in other associations will not be recorded or shown on CFA records.
To determine if your non-CFA registered cat can be registered with us, please mail or email at least a 4-generation pedigree for the cat you wish to register and include a note requesting registration information. For initial review purposes, the pedigree need not be certified and it may be a photocopy. Please be aware that an official registry certified pedigree may later be required in order to apply for the actual registration process with CFA once the cat has been determined to be eligible for registration via pedigree.
For the review purposes only, the pedigree information may be obtained from the breeder of the cat or from the association in which the cat is now registered. The pedigree must include cat names, registration numbers and colors (or breed/color codes) for all cats in the pedigree. If you do not have any pedigree information available and it is necessary for you to purchase a certified pedigree from the registry in which the cat is currently registered, please be aware that, although CFA only needs to see the first 4 generations for review purposes, further generations may be required to complete the actual registration process. If applicable, you can ask the registry association for their fees for upgrading a certified pedigree to 5 or 8 generations from the 4 generations that were originally purchased.
Mail or email to CFA a photocopy of the pedigree for the cat you wish to register and a photocopy of the cat’s registration certificate from the association in which the cat is currently registered. Include a letter requesting registration information. The pedigree will be reviewed and either returned to you or we will contact you by email with further instructions. There is a $15 fee for this review process. Fees for actual registration will be explained in the return correspondence, which will also include any forms you will need to complete the cat’s CFA registration.
If it is determined the cat can be registered in CFA using a certified pedigree, the fee to register a cat via pedigree is $48.00. If your cat cannot be registered with CFA, CFA will retain $15.00 of the $48.00 fee. CFA accepts credit cards for payment of all services. If paying by card, please include:
- Credit card number:
- Expiration date:
- CVV number (Three numbers on back of card for VISA & MC or four numbers on front of card for AE):
- Name of person on card:
- Billing Address of card owner
- Street:
- Country:
Please allow 15-30 business days for processing of the registration once application and payment have been received in this office. Instructions should be included indicating the name(s) to be listed as owner and the postal mailing address to be printed on the cat’s certificate for mailing.
If you already have a certified pedigree for your cat as issued by the current association, please mail or email a photocopy of the pedigree to CFA Central Office along with your request to have the cat registered. We suggest that, if at all possible, applications for registration by submitted via email or mail rather than by fax, which is often difficult to read when printed. Keep the original for your files. Include the $48.00 fee. When applying for registration using a certified pedigree from another association, please use our Registration via Pedigree Form. Be sure to include (via an enclosed letter or email) any additions or changes you want to make, including cattery suffix addition and owner name(s) and address. If the CFA Registration Department can register the cat using the documents received, it will do so. If the Registration Department cannot register your cat, they will return your application less the $15 processing fee, with further instructions. If you submit via email, the Registration Department will reply back to you via email. This type of registration application cannot be submitted using CFA’s online registration service. Registration Via Pedigree Forms
Under certain circumstances, a cat registered with another recognized association may be eligible for CFA registration without prior CFA litter registration by the breeder. Application for registration can be made via certified pedigree from an approved organization with the appropriate number of generations included with the application*
NOTE: these rules apply only to cats being transferred to CFA from other associations/registries recognized by CFA. To obtain registration for cats eligible under this policy, a 5-generation certified pedigree (see Note below for exceptions to the 5-generation requirement), issued by the registrar of the association in which the cat is currently registered, must be submitted for CFA files, either by mail or email. A 5-generation certified pedigree includes the cat to be registered plus five generations of background. A 4-generation certified pedigree includes the cat to be registered plus four generations of background. Pedigrees used for this type of registration will only be accepted from previously approved registration associations (see Note below). Photocopies and emailed copies of the certified documents will be accepted as long as they are clear and complete and CFA can determine from the data provided that the pedigree is certified. Keep the original documents for your files.
Whenever possible, the cat name issued at the time of CFA registration will be the same as the name assigned to the cat when it was originally registered (as printed on the pedigree). Except for the use of the breeder’s CFA-registered cattery name and for the addition of the new owner’s cattery suffix where applicable, signed permission of the cat’s breeder would be required for us to make any changes to the name. CFA Rules for Registration would apply with regard to the allowable length of cat name and with regard to the use of any cattery name registered with CFA in the name of the cat’s breeder.
Pedigrees from selected associations are accepted for registration purposes as long as the pedigree is certified (signed by the registrar and/or stamped with an association seal), provides all required information, and contains the required number of generations of background required by the breed to be registered. Required information includes the name, color (or color code), and registration number for all cats in the background. The breed and colors of those background cats must conform to CFA requirements for the particular breed of cat being registered. If you are not sure whether a particular association’s pedigree will be accepted, contact Central office with the name and location of the association before purchasing the cat and/or the pedigree.
If a pedigree cannot be obtained from the current association that includes all of the required number of generations of background needed to register that particular breed, CFA will accept more than one certified pedigree in order to obtain the required documentation. We will accept a certified pedigree or a photocopy of the registration certificate for the subject cat plus certified pedigrees for each of the parents (or for cats further back in the pedigree as needed).
RECORDED CATS: Cats may be individually recorded for breeding purposes only, not for showing. The requirements for recording are identical to those for individual registration via pedigree, except that one less generation of ancestry is required. Recorded cats may not be shown at CFA shows. This may be a viable option for the cat which has only a 4- generation pedigree.
AOV (Any Other Variety) REGISTRATIONS: In certain instances, a cat’s background (colors and/or breeds) may cause the cat to be registered in CFA as a different breed than what is currently listed as the breed in another cat registry. For example, a cat registered as a Siamese in another registry but whose pedigree reflects colors/breeds in the background that CFA does not accept for registration in the Siamese breed, will be registered in CFA under a breed other than Siamese.
NOTE: The following breeds require certified pedigrees for the number of generations indicated in parentheses after the breed name: Abyssinian (8), American Wirehair (4), Balinese (3 or 5), Burmilla (4), Chartreux (4), Devon Rex (3), European Burmese (8 – North American Registries only), Korat (3), Persian (8), Ragdoll (3), Russian Blue (8), Scottish Fold (4), Selkirk Rex (can be registered using certificate of registration only, no pedigree required), Siamese (8), Siberian (3), Sphynx (3), Tonkinese (3) and Turkish Angora (3). All other breeds require 5 generations.
Titles and awards won in other associations will not be recorded or shown on CFA records.
To determine if your non-CFA registered cat can be registered with us, please mail or email at least a 4-generation pedigree for the cat you wish to register and include a note requesting registration information. There is a $15 fee for this review process.
