The Pet Owners Corner

Dear Cattalker: I would really like to show my pet at a cat show … she is lovely. How do I go about doing that? Nancy D.

Dear Nancy: I am really happy you’d like to show your kitty! One good way to begin is by visiting a cat show to see exactly what is expected of your cat. Show cats (whether pedigreed or not) must be clean, with claws clipped and up to date on vaccinations. If your cat is a household pet at least eight months of age, it must be neutered/spayed. It will need to be amenable to handling by the judge – no scratching, biting, or running away. You can work with your kitty at home, using toys and handling them like the judges do. During the show, your kitty will stay in a cage in the benching area with you. When your assigned number is called, you will carry your cat to the judging ring and place it into the cage provided. Be sure your cat is willing to be carried through groups of people to get to the ring. There are also hints for new people on the CFA website. I hope you will visit a show, and then give showing a try. It is a great bonding experience for you and your cat. You will find the household pet people are welcoming to new exhibitors and very willing to help.

Dear Cattalker: Do I really need to worm my indoor cat? Sara J.

Dear Sara: Most veterinarians recommend that you worm your indoor cat every three months. Indoor cats can still get worms: from leash walking outdoors; from your or visitors’ shoes; from insects getting into your home; from rodents; from flies laying eggs. Your best source of information is your veterinarian, as they know you and your pet. Your veterinarian can provide you with medication to keep at home.

Pet Owners Corner is designed to answer common questions that pet owners may have. Answers will be simple and straight forward. No questions are too silly to ask; if you have that question, others probably do as well. No medical advice will be given because diagnosing and treating is not possible without a proper veterinary examination.
