Dear Cattalker: My vet gives my cat a shot called FVRCP. Can you tell me what this is? I keep forgetting to ask.   Anne L.

Dear Anne: The Letters FVRCP stand for Feline Viral Rhinotracheitis, Calicivirus, Panleukopenia. Often this vaccine is referred to as the distemper vaccine. It protects your cat from herpes, Calicivirus and distemper (panleukopenia). This vaccine used to be given annually; however, newer studies have shown that after the initial vaccine and boosters, it may be given every three years. It is considered a “core vaccine,” meaning it is of importance to the health and wellbeing of your cat.

Dear Cattalker: How many cats is too many??  Andrea R.

Dear Andrea: There is no simple answer to that question, but there are some guidelines. Does your state, county, or city have a law regarding a limit to the number of pets? If so, you need to abide by that. How much room do you have for cats to play, rest, and see out of windows? Each cat needs a place to retreat from the others and they all need room to run and get the zoomies. How much time do you have to devote to individual cat care/grooming, litterboxes, and play? Do you have the financial resources for good food, litter, and proper veterinary care (which includes, spay/neuter as well as annual visits for vaccines and wellness checks)? Do you have a fund for emergencies for the cats? A visit to an ER veterinary clinic is very costly. Do you have the space for a litter box for each cat spaced around your home? Do you plan on keeping them indoors unless on leash and harness? It is highly recommended that cats remain inside for their own safety and health.

Once you determine the answers to the above, deciding how many cats becomes easier. Proper care takes time and space, but the rewards far outweigh the work involved.

Pet Owners Corner is designed to answer common questions that pet owners may have. Answers will be simple and straight forward. No questions are too silly to ask; if you have that question, others probably do as well. No medical advice will be given because diagnosing and treating is not possible without a proper veterinary examination.
