The Pet Owners Corner

Dear Cattalker: Can you give me suggestions to help my cat when I have a pet sitter come twice a day when we are away for 4 days? Annie M

Dear Annie: Using a trusted pet sitter is great for your cat, as cats tend to do better when they are in their own familiar settings.

Some suggestions that I have are:

  • Have your cat meet the sitter ahead of time, if it is not someone the cat already knows.
  • Write down very clear feeding instructions and leave food out on the counter or table. Give directions on how you handle the water bowl.
  • Explain how you care for the litter box, and where you dispose of the scoopings.
  • Leave your location or itinerary along with phone numbers.
  • Leave your veterinarian’s name, phone number, and address. Also leave a note giving the sitter permission to have your cat seen if needed, and how to handle the bill.
  • Make certain the sitter actually “sees” your cat each visit.
  • Encourage the sitter to play with your cat, if your cat is willing.
  • Some people like the sitter to forward a photo or message each day.

And last of all, enjoy your time away … because your cat will be well cared-for.

Pet Owners Corner is designed to answer common questions that pet owners may have. Answers will be simple and straight forward. No questions are too silly to ask; if you have that question, others probably do as well. No medical advice will be given because diagnosing and treating is not possible without a proper veterinary examination.
