Introduction

Certain parts of our world are prone to weather disasters such as hurricanes, floods, tornadoes, blizzards, earthquakes, and/or wildfires. On top of these highly likely disasters are automobile accidents, and an errant squirrel that curiously climbed up the power pole and electrocuted itself. All these scenarios can cause power outages that can be a nightmare for both pet families and breeders alike. Without proper planning, a power outage can mean the difference between life and death for newborn kittens.
Importance of Keeping Kittens Warm
As a retired breeder, the thing this writer misses most is having kittens underfoot. Their antics, play, and discovery are among my most cherished memories. Additionally, caring for newborns until they are ambulatory at approximately four weeks of age is critical, and keeping babies warm and cozy is objective number one. Whether an experienced breeder or someone caring for a litter of barn cats, “caring for kittens can also be challenging because they require special care to develop properly, especially when it comes to keeping them warm.”3
Kittens under three weeks old cannot regulate their body temperature and are at risk of hypothermia, regardless of the time of year in which they were born. “These little animals must rely on external heat sources and the warmth of their surroundings, which is why they need our help. Otherwise, they can get chills quite easily, which could become life-threatening.”3
A warm environment promotes the development of their immune system and supports their growth, “and ensures that their bodies reach all the necessary milestones.”3 Their comfort via a warm environment supports the kittens’ sense of well-being.
Food or Warmth?
The warmth of kittens under four weeks of age cannot be stressed enough. It’s important to understand that kittens need to stay warm to digest their food correctly. By warming the kitten first, you ensure that they’re comfortable and ready to eat. Benefits of prioritizing warmth first include a “warm digest [that] helps with the absorption of nutrients, allowing the kittens to get the maximum benefit from their food.”2 Additionally, a warm environment can “aid in preventing digestive issues such as constipation and diarrhea.”2
Temperature Guidelines
“When creating a cozy environment for kittens, it’s crucial to consider temperature guidelines to ensure their warmth and well-being. The optimal temperature range for keeping kittens warm is between 85°F and 90°F (29°C and 32°C) during their first week of life.
As kittens grow and gain body temperature control, the temperature in the kitten box and the room should be gradually lowered. By the fifth week, kittens can usually regulate their own body temperature and tolerate the ambient room temperature, which is typically around 70°F (21°C).”2
Be Prepared: Options for Heat Sources3
- Electric Heating Pads
- Microwave Heating Disc or Pad
- Incubator
- Create a “Rice Mom” from a gym sock filled with uncooked rice/microwave
- Single-use Hand Warmers
- Self-warming heating pads
- Cat “clams”
- Warm towels
- Create a shelter using a Styrofoam cooler and straw
- Create a “nest” of warm blankets
Conclusion: Key Takeaways1
- Cats and kittens can stay warm in winter or through disasters without electricity
- Feral cats can survive without electricity with human support
- Alternative warming methods include snuggling, feeding extra calories, and providing outdoor or feral cats with a sleeping area lined with straw
- Wood stoves, oil heaters, heating pads, and microwavable products are alternative heating sources.
- Never leave a cat or a litter of kittens alone when the weather turns cold or during a disaster.
