Introduction

“It’s not the purr or the whiskers or even the velvet-soft paws … it’s the way a cat makes you feel less alone in a world that sometimes forgets to be kind.”

Cat Talk welcomes its readers to embark on a journey: not through the far reaches of the cosmos, but instead, into a mystical realm that permeates invisibly our brick and mortar world. Welcome to the spiritual world of the cat. Look deeply into the eyes of the family cat, and there … there you will find myth, legend, and yes, even magic … for this journey takes us into the spiritual essence and healing power of cats.

Animal Reiki Defined

“There are two ways of spreading the light; to be the candle or the mirror that reflects it.” Edith Wharton

All cats are spiritual beings, containing and reflecting their own “Reiki.”  “The word ‘Reiki’ (pronounced ‘RAY-key’) comes from the Japanese words ‘rei’ meaning spirit, and ‘ki’ meaning energy. Written with two joined Japanese kanji or characters, it means ‘spiritual energy,’2 and, among other things, it promotes wellness.

Belief in the healing qualities of cats has been part of the ancient cultures of many peoples. Ancient Egyptians believed cats had “divine energy.”5 The Egyptian goddess Bastet (whose head resembled a cat) was revered “as a protector [which] extended beyond the household. She was believed to guard against evil spirits, disease, and misfortune.”6 Cats were thought to be the link to the restorative powers of nature. The soothing purr of a cat was believed to bring good luck and protection.7

Additionally, the ancient cultures of both Greece and Rome associated cats with the moon and fertility; and in India, cats symbolized childbirth. “It was not until the spread of Christianity during medieval times that cats were demonized and became a symbol of darkness and black magic.”1

Simplistically, Reiki is a healing technique using an ancient form of natural and gentle energy. “It helps bring balance to the mind, body, and spirit of the animal or [human] through meditation.”4 Cats are believed by some to have a powerful aura and to possess the ability to communicate with the spirit world, which enables them to ward off evil spirits and clear their surroundings of negative energies.

Six Pillars of Animal Reiki

The “Let Animals Lead” method of Reiki as outlined in six lessons, or “pillars,” is the perfect approach for this intelligent, sensitive species of non-human animal.”4 These lessons are based on traditional Japanese Reiki techniques used by and for humans, but differ from traditional Reiki meditation in that Let Animals Lead specifically allows the animal to choose to come to you, instead of vice-versa.

These six pillars of animal Reiki are relatively new, and open the mind to learn and accept that cats can teach humans about shared energy via emotions and body language. Cats are empaths, sensing human emotions, compassion, and affection in ways humans “will never be able to fully comprehend.”4

Pillar 1: Cats teach us that sometimes you just have to remember to breathe.4

The Reiki Space Meditation, as presented by Kathleen Prasad, “is a very simple practice that involves seeing your breath as a pure and clear light. As you breathe in, imagine this light comes in through your crown and fills your body, all the way down to your lower belly. As you breathe out, imagine this light expands out of your skin, into your aura, and out into the universe.”4 Stress invades our daily life, invited or not, and sometimes we forget to breathe. The Reiki technique promotes calm breathing, which shifts your energy and signals to others that all is well. Stressed cats in Prasad’s care responded powerfully to a session of this meditation technique.4

Pillar 2:  Cats teach us that healing is about touching hearts, not hands.4

As tactile creatures, we humans tend to assume that our hands are capable of healing, and touch allows for connection. Pillar 2, however, lets the cat lead, emphasizing that “no touch is wanted4 and that touching should be initiated by the cat. “Cats know that healing is much more than skin deep!”4

Pillar 3:  Cats teach us that healing is possible amidst illness.4

The human approach to illness and disease is to search for a cure, a way to heal or eradicate the disease. Animal Reiki opens the mind to the idea that there is more than one way to effect a cure, and that mind and spirit are powerful entities once we learn how to tap into them. Reiki is an approach that combines conventional interventions with holistic practices. Cats in tune with a human who is ill will often approach the individual and attempt to sit near or in the affected area, touch with its paws, and “tell you that all is well.”4  If the sufferer is tuned in, peace will come. All WILL BE well.

Pillar 4:  Cats teach us how to be present with them as we meditate. 4

Becoming attuned to our feline friends adds to the meditation experience. If you create a stress-free environment by sitting or lying nearby on a soft pallet, it offers the cat an invitation to move closer. This makes meditation mutual and easy because “1. It’s quiet 2. The cats are relatively still and relaxed 3. There are no noisy distractions.”4

Pillar 5:  Cats can teach us the power of intention and show us when we are being too pushy.4

Cats are more aware of our intentions than we realize. Who among us has not experienced a cat seemingly knowing what we intend to do next? A cat does not need to be in the same space at the start of a Reiki meditation session. If you begin the meditation by “radiating love and compassion and just being present in the space,”4 , it could surprise you how quickly a cat, sensing your desire to commune, may join the session.

Pillar 6:  Cats can teach us that healing is not a one-way street.4

As presented in the six pillars of Reiki healing, communicating with cats through meditation and (possibly) touch purifies the human psyche and physical body. However, as we engage in spirit to heal ourselves, we are also healing the cat. Cats can suffer from many diseases, and a quiet, contemplative communion may allow felines to recover from whatever ails them, giving them peace and recovery from their pain. While most animals will nurse their pain and/or illnesses alone, a cat will ask its human for comfort and love if that being is tuned in to its needs. “And so, we would sit in Reiki and heal, together as One.”4

Relax and Breathe

“The next time you are petting a cat … relax to the sound of their purring and immerse yourself in the sense of pure bliss.” 1 Allow it to overtake you and your stress to melt away. The negative energy will depart and, finally, a feeling of harmony and a quiet mind will emerge.
