Becoming a mentor in the Cat Fanciers’ Association (CFA) Judging Program is a significant commitment that requires time, responsibility, and an in-depth understanding of the current judging program rules. However, it is also an incredibly rewarding role that allows you to play a vital part in shaping the next generation of CFA judges.

The Value of Mentorship

The CFA Judging Program recognizes the hard work and dedication of breeders who apply. The process represents years of effort in breeding, showing, and contributing to CFA events, yet this experience alone does not fully prepare an applicant to navigate the intricate requirements of the judging program. That is where a mentor steps in.

The Role of a Mentor

A mentor provides comprehensive guidance and support throughout the applicant’s journey. Their responsibilities include being:

  • A guide to interpreting and applying the judging program rules.
  • A sounding board for questions and concerns.
  • A resource for practical knowledge based on years of experience.

Mentors play a critical role in helping applicants develop the skills and expertise necessary to become successful CFA judge.

Mentor Responsibilities

Mentors provide assistance in several key areas, including:

  • Breed Selection: helping applicants determine which breeds to show and gain experience with.
  • Breed Knowledge and Handling: offering insight to the nuances of different breeds and proper handling techniques.
  • Application Requirements: guiding applicants to meet the criteria outlined in the current Judging Program Rules.
  • Judge’s Book Accuracy: teaching applicants to maintain an error-free judge book.
  • Cattery Visitations: Facilitating breed-related experiences in breeders’ homes as well as in show halls.

Mentors remain involved with their assigned applicant from the beginning stages until the applicant achieves their goal of becoming an approved CFA Allbreed judge.
