All About Cat Whiskers

Candilee Jackson

Introduction

Welcome to my new recurring column “Did You Know ??”, a compilation of all sorts of feline trivia. As a disclaimer, a great deal of the material comes from my head (having lived with cats for seventy-plus years), as well as from a mountain range-sized and (most likely) a bottomless pit of cat trivia found online. Please note that some of the material will be sourced, some is from old wives’ tales, and some is just stuff I know. And yeah, I tried to check out online sources for the “head” stuff, so please enjoy!

A Little Felinology, If You Please! (And yes, that word DOES exist)

All cats have whiskers: wild cats, big cats, domestic cats, and feral cats. Even the “Cats” who portrayed Andrew Lloyd Weber’s infamous cats of T.S. Eliot’s collection of poems, Old Possum’s Book of Practical Cats, had whiskers! Basically, a cat’s whiskers are its built-in radar system.

The correct term for whiskers is “vibrissae,2 which are seated deeply in the feline’s skin where they are surrounded by nerves and blood vessels that send receptor messages directly to a cat’s brain. These hairs can detect even the tiniest changes in air currents, which means cats can ‘feel’ things before they even touch them. That’s part of what makes cats such graceful hunters—even in complete darkness.”2

A cat’s whiskers are made out of the same material as hair and claws: keratin.

Whiskers Are Not Just on a Cat’s Muzzle

The most noticeable whiskers are around the cat’s nose. But cats also have whiskers on their eyebrows, chin, and even the backs of their front legs.

“The leg whiskers, called ‘carpal vibrissae,’ help detect movement from prey or obstacles below them, which is especially handy during hunting or climbing.” These whiskers behind the cat’s front paws can detect body heat as well as environmental information. Eyebrow whiskers,  “superciliary vibrissae” serve distinct protective and navigational functions. These whiskers primarily act as a protective mechanism for the eyes, sensing nearby objects or potential threats.3

So, How Many Whiskers Does a Cat Have?

“The average cat has roughly twelve whiskers on each side of their muzzle, divided into three rough rows of four, for a grand total of twenty-four whiskers (on their face). They also have whiskers on their limbs, which are often much more difficult to spot, particularly in long-haired cats.”1 Cats can have six to ten eyebrow whiskers, and twelve to sixteen whiskers on their forepaws.

The number of whiskers and their pattern can vary from cat to cat, and even within breeds. Some whiskers may be straight, curved, or even curly. Whisker colors can vary as well: most cat whiskers are white, but some breeds will sport black whiskers, while others will have tortoise-shell colored whiskers, and others will complement the color of a cat’s fur.

“Whisker-ology” 1-2-3

  • Whiskers enable balance and agility
  • Whiskers give cats depth perception
  • Whiskers allow cats to have spatial awareness
  • Whiskers give cats their sense of direction
  • NEVER trim a cat’s whiskers – trimming affects balance!
  • Avoid “whisker fatigue” by using large bowls for food and a fountain for water
  • Cats will shed and regrow their whiskers over a two to three-month time period
  • Whiskers are good items for pet memorial jewelry
  • The Irish believe that finding a cat’s whisker in your home brings good luck
  • Whiskers are usually as wide as the cat’s body, again to aid with depth perception
  • Reading a cat’s whiskers can tell you their mood: angry, sad, on the hunt, interested
