CFA Disaster Relief Kobe, Japan - 1995
The Great Hanshin-Awaji Earthquake
We were all shocked and worried when we heard the devastating news about
the severe earthquake in Kobe and surrounding cities. At 5:46 on the
morning of January 17, 1995 one of the most beautiful cities in the Hansai
district of Western Japan and a city famed for its "million dollar night
views" was almost totally flattened by a major earthquake.
The earthquake destroyed some 100,000 homes, injured 300,000 people and
took 5,000 lives. In the midst of this shocking nightmare and desolation,
a group of volunteers set up a tent to use as a base for the rescue of
homeless cats and dogs. Rescue experts from the United States were sent
to aid in the rescue arrangements, and a computer network was setup to
provide long-distance help.
Cat food was passed out in various areas where suffering cats were
reported to be. Often cats were located in dangerous places under
shifting debris, and it was better to mark their locations on a map, and
leave food and water for them each day than to try and capture them.
Cages in the rescue area were kept clean by volunteers from our CFA clubs,
and rescued stray cats were assigned cages and given food and water. Cats
and young kittens were taken by members of the SPCA for additional care.
Volunteers managed to find homes throughout the country for as many as 80
rescued cats. Many of the remaining cats have now been transferred to the
outskirts of Kobe, and volunteer workers are continuing to help them for
as long as necessary.
Donations of money, pet food, and medical supplies and the generous
donation of volunteer time have helped to ease the situation. We owe a
debt of gratitude for those who took time out of their personal lives to
ease the pain and suffering of the many animals who suddenly had no
homes.
